200-unit electricity subsidy likely extended by six months

Pakistan's 200-unit electricity subsidy for protected consumers may run until June 30, 2027, after an IMF understanding, sources said on Saturday.

Sources said the IMF agreed to extend the 200-unit electricity subsidy for protected consumers by six months, to June 30, 2027.

The subsidy was due to end on December 31, 2026, and the IMF had earlier targeted January 1, 2027 for ending it.

Under the current mechanism, protected households receive about Rs13 per unit; going one unit over 200 can mean up to Rs33 per unit and six months without protected status.

The IMF wants the subsidy gradually limited to households registered with the Benazir Income Support Programme.

The extension and the government's planned changes to the slab system are still proposals.
