Islamabad local polls to proceed under 2015 law, ECP rules
The Election Commission has directed officials to issue the schedule the same day, years after the last elected local government term in the capital expired in February 2021.
The Election Commission of Pakistan ordered Islamabad local government elections under the Islamabad Local Government Act, 2015, on Wednesday, October 21.
A five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja directed officials to issue the poll schedule the same day.
The last elected local government term in the Islamabad Capital Territory expired in February 2021, and the Elections Act, 2017 requires polls within 120 days of expiry.
The presidential ordinance expired on September 6, the final delimitation was published on October 14, and the Islamabad local government rules had not been provided.
The interior secretary said holding polls under the 2015 law would mean discarding work done so far, while the chief election commissioner said it would not affect delimitation.
