Electricity bill relief: govt to scrap 200-unit slab
Power Minister Awais Leghari told the Senate the government will scrap the 200-unit protected slab that spikes bills, targeting electricity bill relief with a plan due in about six weeks.
Power Minister Awais Leghari told the Senate the government will scrap the slab that punishes consumers who cross 200 units even by one unit.
Protected users get about Rs13 a unit in subsidy; going over can mean up to Rs33 a unit and a six-month bar on relief.
Options under study include raising the limit to 250 units or ending the six-month penalty; a plan is due in about one and a half months.
Future subsidy would target poverty-line and lower-middle income households, not only low grid use.
Circular debt is about Rs1.67 trillion; the Rs3.23 per unit debt servicing surcharge is slated to go within four years.
