At Pakistan Water Week 2026 in Islamabad, the Senate chairman said blocking or diverting Pakistan’s water share would invite a direct response and urged a shift to flood prevention.
Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said no party can unilaterally alter, suspend or revoke the Indus Waters Treaty.
He warned that blocking, suspending or diverting Pakistan’s legitimate water share would be an act of war and invite a direct response.
Speaking as chief guest at the Sixth Pakistan Water Week 2026 in Islamabad, he linked water security to floods, droughts and agriculture.
He recalled the 2010 floods that affected about 20 million people and called for prevention, preparedness and climate adaptation.
He set a national aim for Pakistan to be water-secure and flood-resilient by 2047.
