Islamabad local elections stalled; ECP hearing on Oct 21

The commission will decide whether polls can be held under the 2015 local government law, after a 2026 amendment ordinance expired on September 6 without being enacted.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will hold a formal hearing on October 21, 2026.

The hearing will decide whether Islamabad polls can be held under the ICT Local Government Act, 2015.

The Islamabad Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, lapsed, and the replacement legislation was not enacted.

Islamabad's local government tenure expired in 2021, and the law required fresh polls within 120 days.

The ECP intends to issue an election schedule under the previous law after the hearing.
