First infant mpox death in Karachi takes Sindh toll to 12
A 52-day-old boy treated for more than a week at a Karachi infectious diseases hospital died Saturday, the city's first infant death linked to the viral infection.
A 52-day-old boy died Saturday at Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital & Research Centre — Karachi’s first infant mpox death.
He had been treated for at least 10 days; infection was reportedly linked to circumcision at an unlicensed Malir facility now sealed.
Sindh’s mpox tally this year stands at 12 deaths and 98 cases; at least seven patients remain under care in Karachi.
Another infant who had circumcision at the same Malir hospital is still critical, a senior doctor said.
Earlier outbreaks in Khairpur and Sukkur also killed infants in settings with weak infection control.
