Pakistan Railways told the National Assembly that the Karachi to Rohri railway track is the first phase of the ML-1 project, aimed at cutting accidents on the line.

Pakistan Railways plans a new 480-kilometre track between Karachi and Rohri, costing $2.5 billion.

The Karachi to Rohri line is the first phase of the wider ML-1 project, with safety as the stated aim.

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi told the National Assembly that civil work is likely to begin in January 2027.

Abbasi said 349 derailments were recorded from January 2022 to September 2026, with faulty tracks the leading cause.
