Under KP emergency rule, President Zardari suspended the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Sunday, and CM Sohail Afridi was placed in preventive custody in Peshawar.

President Asif Ali Zardari declared a state of emergency on Sunday and suspended the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government led by Sohail Afridi.

Minister Talal Chaudhry said Afridi and some cabinet members were placed in preventive custody on Sunday at the chief minister’s house in Peshawar.

The New Indian Express reported 278 PTI members detained; other outlets, citing police, said hundreds were held. No full list of names was published.

PTI says the move was meant to block a march on Islamabad; a federal minister said talks failed after the party would not publicly condemn terrorism.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said Governor Faisal Karim Kundi would take charge of the province.
