KP governor rule did not overthrow elected government

On Tuesday, Azam Nazeer Tarar said the KP governor rule did not overthrow an elected government and was imposed under the Constitution as terrorism incidents in the province rose.

Azam Nazeer Tarar said no elected government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was overthrown by the emergency and governor's rule.

He said the steps were taken under Articles 232 and 234, with the president acting on the prime minister's advice.

President Asif Ali Zardari proclaimed the measures on October 11 on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's advice, citing worsening security and failed talks.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said chief minister Sohail Afridi rejected an agreed counterterrorism arrangement.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, in power in the province since 2013, condemned the move and said it would go to court.
