Tribunal sets aside Lahore doctor penalty in 2021 death case
The Lahore doctor case verdict clears prior negligence findings against Dr Muhammad Sheraz Saleem over Hafsa Umer’s 2021 death, orders a fresh inquiry, and states he has not been cleared.
The Medical Tribunal set aside negligence and dishonesty findings against senior anaesthetist Dr Muhammad Sheraz Saleem and overturned the cancellation of his licence.
The ruling concerns the death of Hafsa Umer after an orthopaedic procedure at Hameed Latif Hospital on March 20, 2021; she died three days later.
The tribunal ordered a fresh inquiry and said he has not been exonerated; unresolved issues include emergency timing, footage, recorded times and doctors’ responsibilities.
Umer Farooq’s appeal was partly allowed so the regulator must reconsider complaints against specific practitioners after giving him a chance to respond.
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council must provide an indexed copy of the proceedings, including expert opinions and statements, within 14 days.
