Mental health in Pakistan statistics show 32% affected
A five-year national survey of nearly 18,000 adults across all four provinces found 32% currently living with a diagnosable mental or behavioural disorder, with PTSD and depression among the most common.
Pakistan’s first nationally representative mental health survey found 32% of adults currently living with a mental or behavioural disorder.
Nearly 18,000 adults across all four provinces took part between 2018 and 2022; lifetime prevalence was 38%.
One in five adults met criteria for PTSD; more than one in 10 had depression; 6% reported suicidal thoughts in the previous month.
Rates were higher among older adults, people with lower education or income, the unemployed, and those widowed, divorced or separated.
Lead researcher Prof Raza-ur-Rahman said the findings should guide policy and show where support is most needed.
