OpenAI math breakthroughs spark praise and access debate

OpenAI says it used expert “shepherds” to share claims on the Kakeya conjecture, the exponential time hypothesis, and physics work that remains unpublished.

On Monday, OpenAI announced claimed advances in mathematics, computer science, and physics, with different release plans for each.

The maths claim aims to resolve the Kakeya conjecture in all dimensions; computer science work targets the exponential time hypothesis; physics material has not been released.

OpenAI says expert “shepherds” guided how to share the results after dumping hundreds of preprints on mathematicians in early October.

Outside researchers call the science potentially major but criticise handpicking who can see the work first.

AGMAI, which OpenAI had pledged to consult, had urged against selective first access the day before the announcement.
