Opera WebAI standard lets users run AI on their devices
Opera browser AI gains WebAI, an early preview in Opera One that runs open-weight models on your device, with Opera GX and Neon due to follow.
Opera introduced WebAI, a web standard for running AI models inside the browser on the user’s device rather than in the cloud.
An early preview is available in Opera One; Opera GX and Opera Neon are expected to receive the same features later.
Users must opt in; WebAI is not tied to one model and can work with open-weight systems such as Google’s Gemma, plus Apple’s on-device foundation model on Macs.
Opera says processing stays on the device, so users need not send personal data to company servers or pay for a cloud AI subscription.
Local runs can strain a computer’s hardware; the company says performance depends on the device.
