Afghan forces resume construction at disputed Torkham checkpost
In today's Pakistan Afghanistan border news, Pakistani forces fired warning shots at Torkham after Afghan forces restarted work on a disputed post, officials said.
Pakistani border forces fired warning shots on Friday evening after Afghan border forces restarted a disputed checkpost on their side of the Torkham border.
Officials at Torkham said it was the second time this week that Afghan authorities broke a mutual agreement against building within 100 metres of the border.
Afghan authorities had abandoned work on the Zangali checkpost on October 19 after Pakistan protested; the work has now restarted.
Repatriation of undocumented Afghans was suspended temporarily on October 19 and resumed after Afghan authorities stopped construction.
Residents stayed indoors during the warning shots; Pakistan says it seeks negotiated solutions but will not compromise on border security.
