Envoy Jadoon links Ukraine strikes to food, energy risk

Pakistan's UN ceasefire appeal on Ukraine came after Russian strikes that, the UN said, killed more than 100 civilians and injured at least 429 this week.

Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan's acting UN representative, demanded immediate de-escalation and a robust ceasefire after four years of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Security Council met on Friday at Ukraine's request, after a new wave of Russian air strikes on civilian centres and infrastructure.

UN official Khaled Khiari said OHCHR figures showed more than 100 civilians killed and at least 429 injured this week.

Jadoon asked Russia and Ukraine to respect the UN Charter and raised attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea.

Pakistan welcomed reports of a possible US-facilitated meeting between Russia and Ukraine and backed a peaceful settlement.
