Power subsidies shift to BISP eyed from January 2027
A ministerial committee chaired by Ahsan Iqbal will recommend how to move electricity relief from broad unit-based discounts towards BISP-linked support for low-income households.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a high-level ministerial committee, led by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, to redesign power-sector subsidies.
The panel must submit recommendations within two months of 18 October 2026; reforms are planned to begin on 1 January 2027.
Support would gradually move from broad electricity discounts towards targeted help for low-income households via BISP.
Relief for households using up to 200 units a month is under review; eligibility may shift from usage alone to household circumstances.
Pakistan’s total subsidy bill is put at about Rs1.091 trillion; the power-sector allocation for FY2026-27 is Rs830 billion.
