SBP data shows Rs87bn private sector net borrowing
State Bank figures for 1 July to 23 October show Rs87 billion in net loans, reversing Rs29 billion of debt retirement in the same window a year earlier.
From 1 July to 23 October FY27, the private sector was a net borrower of Rs87 billion, versus Rs29 billion of debt retirement a year earlier.
The shift is the first such turn in 2026-27 and follows government pressure on banks to lend more to the private sector.
Conventional banks saw only Rs320 million in debt retirement, against Rs117 billion a year earlier; Islamic banks retired Rs63 billion net.
The State Bank last week raised the policy rate by 50 basis points to 12%, with analysts expecting further rises while four-month average inflation stays in double digits.
The prime minister again urged the Finance Ministry to act against banks delaying loans for farmers, SMEs and the Apna Ghar scheme.
