QatarEnergy LNG hedge aims to protect Hormuz export income
CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi says long-term US and other LNG buys would let QatarEnergy earn from gas price spikes if the Strait of Hormuz is closed.
QatarEnergy is purchasing long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States and other suppliers.
CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said the buys form a trading and arbitrage hedge if Hormuz exports are disrupted.
He said a strait closure would spike gas prices and create revenue QatarEnergy would not otherwise earn.
Kaabi, also Qatar’s minister of state for energy affairs, framed the plan as protection against future Hormuz disruption and lost income linked to the Iran war.
