OpenAI CEO: PC RAM sits idle while AI centres need it

Sam Altman RAM shortage remarks on Cheeky Pint argue that PCs leave DRAM largely idle, while shared AI data centres would put limited memory to fuller use.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told the Cheeky Pint podcast that loading PCs with scarce DRAM is a poor global use of memory.

He said personal computers may use their available memory only about 5% of the time.

He argued cloud AI data centres can share the same chips across more users and workloads.

Samsung and SK Hynix have long-term supply deals with cloud and AI infrastructure buyers as consumer memory prices rise.

His point covers AI workloads, not everyday PC tasks that still need RAM.
