DOJ deploys 1,000 election monitors across all 50 US states
Washington says about 1,000 DOJ election monitors and observers will cover every state for the midterms, focusing on voter-access concerns and competitive races.
The US Justice Department said it is sending 1,000 election monitors and observers to all 50 states.
Officials call it the largest Election Day monitoring effort in the department’s history, roughly triple the last midterm.
Priorities include places with past voter-access problems and competitive races seen as possible targets of intimidation.
Monitors will check federal voting-rights compliance; they cannot stop people from voting or investigate on the spot.
Several states have issued new guidance limiting what DOJ observers may do inside polling places.
