Workers demand review of IPP agreements over power tariffs
In Lahore, the Wapda hydro electric workers' union pressed for an IPP power contracts review and opposed privatising profitable distributors, citing public hardship.
The All Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Workers Union has called for a review of agreements with independent power producers (IPPs).
General secretary Khurshid Ahmed said the terms were unfair and anti-people given the public's economic difficulties.
He said billions of dollars were paid to IPPs yearly even when their electricity was not purchased, while the power crisis continued.
He said rising power tariffs had become a burden for low-income households.
The union also opposed plans to privatise profitable power distribution companies and criticised haste linked to assurances to an IMF delegation.
