ECP bars AI deepfakes targeting candidates, officials

The Election Commission of Pakistan has proposed code-of-conduct rules limiting AI use that could mislead voters in elections.

Deepfakes and other synthetic likenesses of candidates, officials, judges and security personnel would be strictly banned.

AI-altered campaign material, robocalls and voice clones would need clear disclosure; parties must keep records for the ECP.

Media and influencers would have to label AI election content; Pemra, SMPRA and the NCCIA would monitor non-compliance.

Stakeholders can send feedback to the ECP Secretariat in Islamabad by 20 November 2026.
