The sources said the militants belonged to Fitna al-Khawarij and were prevented from entering Pakistan.
Security sources said Afghan Taliban forces opened fire, and Pakistani troops responded with heavy weapons.
The sources said the retaliatory fire caused substantial damage to Afghan Taliban border posts; no casualty figures have been announced.
