Govt seeks $1bn for LPG terminals, storage at Port Qasim

Cabinet proposals seek a larger Port Qasim terminal, deeper ship access, and a bigger role for state firms in securing long-term LPG supplies.

About $1 billion is estimated for LPG import infrastructure over the next three to five years.

Proposals before the federal cabinet focus on Port Qasim terminals, storage, cylinders, filling plants and transport.

Existing Port Qasim terminals hold about 6,500 metric tons each and take ships of no more than 10,000 DWT.

A 40,000-metric-ton terminal is proposed, with a first phase of 10,000–12,000 metric tons near the SSGC jetty.

PSO and SLL may be allowed long-term and government-to-government LPG supply deals as an import backstop.
