NA unanimously backs wider workplace harassment protections

Lawmakers unanimously backed a House motion moved by Dr Shahida Rehmani, stressing that gender bias and hostile treatment at work deserve the same legal weight as sexual misconduct.

The National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on workplace harassment on Friday, 30 October, in Islamabad.

MNA Dr Shahida Rehmani, secretary of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, moved the motion.

The text treats gender discrimination, intimidation, humiliation, hostile conduct and abuse of power as harassment, including when no sexual advance is involved.

It restates protections in the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010, as changed in 2022.

The House asked the federal government and relevant bodies to apply the statute fully so non-sexual complaints are not left unprotected.
