OpenAI data center Georgia vows power for 700,000 homes
OpenAI will test releasing up to 1,000 megawatts from its Effingham County site in extreme weather, enough for air conditioners in about 700,000 homes, as US communities push back on AI power use.
OpenAI will pilot its Grid Protectors Program at a forthcoming data center in Effingham County, Georgia.
The company says it can free up to 1,000 megawatts during extreme weather or grid emergencies.
That release, OpenAI says, could run air conditioners in around 700,000 homes.
OpenAI frames on-site power plants as a reserve utilities can tap when communities need electricity most.
The firm is also building Stargate campuses with Oracle and SoftBank in Texas and New Mexico.
