Scheduled banks' deposits jump Rs19.83tr since Sept 2022
Former minister Gohar Ejaz says scheduled banks' deposits rose Rs19.83 trillion in four years, but warns funds must reach industry rather than keep financing government borrowing.
Scheduled banks' deposits reached Rs40.83 trillion in September 2026, up from Rs21 trillion in September 2022.
The four-year rise was Rs19.83 trillion, nearly doubling the deposit base.
Former minister Dr Gohar Ejaz said the extra funds should finance businesses and industry, not mainly the government.
Heavy government borrowing can crowd out private borrowers, especially smaller firms facing higher costs and collateral hurdles.
A lasting shift into government securities could limit credit for investment, jobs and private-sector growth.
