Pakistan’s 4.5GW battery haul nears half of 9.5GW historic total
Lawmakers in Islamabad heard that the early-2026 surge nearly matches half of all historic storage arrivals, as the Power Division prepares four pilot BESS tenders.
Pakistan imported over 4.5GW of battery storage equipment in the first six months of 2026.
That intake is nearly half of the country’s cumulative historic total of 9.5GW.
The Power Division will launch competitive tenders for four 10MWh pilot BESS projects across LESCO, MEPCO, IESCO and PESCO within 15 days.
NEPRA is designating battery storage as a regulated asset so utilities can ease overloaded transformers at about half the cost of new grid stations.
Storage gear faces a 35–40% cumulative tax and duty load; a basic 5kWh battery costs upwards of Rs250,000.
