Petrol demand in Pakistan still leans on overseas fuel

Petrol demand in Pakistan is only partly covered at home, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik told the Senate, as most fuel still arrives from overseas suppliers.

Ali Pervez Malik told the Senate domestic plants cover about 30–40% of national petrol needs; the rest is imported.

Daily local crude output is about 60,000–70,000 barrels, while refining can process roughly 450,000–500,000 barrels.

Imported crude is used so plants can keep diesel flowing; PSO may bring in refined fuel at peak times.

An Rs80/litre petroleum levy and an Rs5/litre climate charge apply to petrol and diesel under the IMF deal.

A Quetta meeting with Balochistan’s chief minister is planned next week on gas supply and slabs.
