Imported coal, HSD drive up Pakistan electricity fuel costs
September output rose only modestly, but a costly shift toward imported coal and diesel pushed the fuel cost adjustment request to its highest level since mid-2024.
September power generation reached 12.76 billion units, up 4.4% year on year, while overall fuel costs rose nearly 44%.
Imported coal output more than doubled to 2.15 billion units; RLNG generation more than halved to 800 million units.
High-speed diesel generation hit its highest level since February 2022, at about Rs62 per unit.
The September fuel cost adjustment request stood at Rs2.56 per unit, the highest since June 2024; the final allowance may be nearer Rs2.
Winter cooling demand should ease, but limited cheaper fuels may keep generation costs elevated.
