US to stop nearly $4bn a year in military aid to Israel
President Donald Trump says Israel will still buy American weapons, that Benjamin Netanyahu backed ending the cash support, and that Washington could help again if needed.
President Trump said US yearly military aid to Israel of nearly $4 billion will stop after the end of this year.
Under a 10-year deal fixed in 2016, the US has been giving Israel about $3.8 billion a year in military aid.
Trump said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed and had himself proposed ending the assistance.
Israel would remain free to buy US weapons, and Trump said America could help again if Israel needed it.
Despite close ties, Trump and Netanyahu are not due to meet at a key UN General Assembly moment.
