US to stop nearly $4bn a year in military aid to Israel

President Donald Trump says Israel will still buy American weapons, that Benjamin Netanyahu backed ending the cash support, and that Washington could help again if needed.

US President Donald Trump has said Washington will stop giving Israel nearly $4 billion a year in military aid after the end of this year, while leaving the door open for Israel to keep buying American weapons.

Trump made the claim in a telephone interview. He said he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were aligned on the step and had discussed it for several years. According to Trump, Netanyahu himself suggested ending the assistance because Israel no longer believes it should take that form of US financial support.

What the aid package has looked like

A 10-year arrangement agreed in 2016 has framed the flow of help: under that deal, the United States has provided Israel about $3.8 billion a year in military aid. Trump’s public figure for the support he says will stop is roughly $4 billion a year.

He stressed that ending the yearly grant does not mean a full break in defence ties. Israel, he said, would still be free to purchase US arms. He also said that if Israel later needed help, the United States could step in again.

Diplomacy around the announcement

Trump presented the move as a shared decision with Netanyahu rather than a sudden cut imposed without consultation. That framing matters for how the change is read in the region: as a negotiated shift in how support is delivered, not an overnight rupture in the alliance.

At the same time, the two leaders—often described as close partners—are not scheduled to meet at an important United Nations General Assembly occasion. The absence of that meeting sits beside the aid announcement as a separate signal about the pace and style of their current diplomacy.

What remains unclear

Trump’s remarks set out the political intention and the broad money figure. They do not, in the material available, spell out every legal or budgetary step needed to wind down the 2016 framework, nor a detailed calendar beyond the end of the current year. How purchases of US weapons would be financed once the yearly aid stops was also left as a general point rather than a line-by-line plan.

For Pakistani readers, the story sits in a wider pattern: US decisions on Middle East security aid shape the balance of power in a region that already weighs heavily on Pakistan’s foreign policy debate, energy routes, and diaspora ties. The concrete household effect inside Pakistan is indirect; the direct change Trump described is between Washington and Tel Aviv.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Trump ne kaha hai ke is saal ke baad America Israel ko har saal qarib 4 arab dollar ki fauji madad nahi dega. Israel phir bhi America se hathiyar kharid sakega, aur zarurat pare to madad dubara ho sakti hai. Trump ke mutabiq Netanyahu khud yeh madad band karne ki baat pehle se kehte rahe hain. Pakistanion ke liye seedha bill ya petrol rate nahi badla, lekin Middle East ki power balance ki khabar zaroori hai.
