Wheat market reform in Pakistan has left Punjab growers with volatile prices, a failed private procurement drive, and planned federal imports of up to 1 million tonnes.
Official support price and large-scale public wheat procurement ended in April 2025; the coming season is the third under that shift.
In April 2026, Punjab’s private-led buy secured only 160,000 tonnes against a 2.5 million-tonne target, and prices crashed.
At the early-October Federal Committee on Agriculture meeting, Punjab did not commit to a 25 million-tonne provincial target, blocking a 33 million-tonne national goal.
The federal government has moved to import up to 1 million tonnes of wheat for domestic needs.
Wheat has risen from Rs1,800 per 40kg in 2020–21 to Rs4,500 this year; a proposed Rs5,000 rate would raise that increase to nearly 178%.
