Karachi's 25 councils covered in $150m tax package
Sindh PREP will help 25 Karachi councils raise more from the city property levy and put most of that money back into local services for about 3.58 million residents.
The World Bank has cleared $150 million for Sindh PREP, focused on Karachi’s 25 local councils.
About 3.58 million residents in those councils are listed as the main beneficiaries of planned service spending.
The scheme targets higher take from UIPT—the city levy on fixed property—and stronger local delivery capacity.
Sindh councils still rely on the province for over 95 percent of their money, the bank’s country director said.
Roughly 70 percent of UIPT gathered under the programme is to be put back into local infrastructure and services.
