Foreign investors sent $864.3 million in profits and dividends out of Pakistan during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, which ran from July to September 2026. The amount was up 7.67% from $802.7 million a year earlier, according to State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data. The rise came as stronger foreign exchange reserves helped the country absorb higher dollar outflows, a sign that foreign investment in Pakistan is generating larger returns for overseas owners.

Sectors and the kinds of investment

Of the total, $844.4 million was linked to foreign direct investment (FDI), meaning money put into Pakistani businesses by foreign companies, often to own or control a stake. Portfolio investment, which covers foreign purchases of shares and similar holdings, accounted for $20 million, up from $17.1 million a year earlier. Repatriation in September alone reached $306.8 million, up 3.58% from August and 92.96% from the same month last year.

Financial businesses were the largest sector, with outflows rising to $242.5 million from $234.9 million. The power sector came second at $217.7 million, up from $186 million, while communications outflows climbed to $90.1 million from $68.3 million.

By country, China's $315.1 million in FDI-related payments, up from $205.6 million, was the largest of the countries named. The United Kingdom followed with $188.5 million, down from $213.2 million a year earlier. The Netherlands came next with $113.5 million, while the United States recorded $55.7 million and Switzerland $32.5 million.

Reserves and the policy backdrop

The SBP governor told global investors last week that the economy had become more resilient to domestic and external shocks. Official figures show foreign exchange reserves rose from less than $3 billion in February 2023 to $21.5 billion as of October 9. Reserves are the foreign currency held by the central bank, and a larger stock gives the country more room to meet import bills and investor payments at the same time. Stable reserves matter for foreign investment in Pakistan because investors want assurance that their returns can be paid out.

Some coverage puts the annual increase at 6.67%, but the stated totals of $864.3 million and $802.7 million work out to 7.67%, which is the figure used in this article. The stronger buffer comes as import costs rise because of geopolitical tensions, and the October-December quarter figures will show whether profit outflows keep climbing.
