The Hub Power Company Limited (PSX: HUBC), known as HUBCO, has said that Unit 1 of a coal-fired power plant in Gaddani, Lasbela District, is out of service after a serious electrical fault in its main transformer. The company made the disclosure to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the country's main securities market, on October 21. The unit will stay offline while the fault is investigated and repaired.

The plant and its owners

The affected facility, China Power Hub Generation Company Limited (CPHGC), has two coal-fired generation units with a combined capacity of about 660 megawatts (MW), a measure of how much electricity a plant can produce at full output. The site also includes an integrated coal jetty, a landing structure where coal shipments are unloaded. It is located in Hub Tehsil, Gaddani, in Lasbela District, Balochistan.

CPHGC is a joint venture, meaning a business partnership between two companies. Its partners are Hub Power Holdings Limited, which is wholly owned by HUBCO, and China Power International (Pakistan) Investment Limited. The company has not divided the 660 MW between the two units, so the output lost during the outage cannot be worked out from the disclosure.

What happens next

HUBCO said Unit 1 will remain unavailable for electricity generation while the investigation and repair continue. The company has not said how long the outage will last or when the unit is expected to return to service. The disclosure refers only to Unit 1.

Readers can follow any update on the restart through HUBCO's disclosures to the stock exchange.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Gaddani ke Hub Power plant ka Unit 1 transformer mein sangeen kharabi ki wajah se band hai. Company ne kaha hai ke kharabi ki jaanch aur marammat tak yeh unit bijli nahi banaye ga. Abhi yeh nahi bataya gaya ke yeh kitne din band rahega. Is ka asar bijli ki supply par ho sakta hai, lekin kitna, is ki tafseel abhi nahi di gayi.
