Pakistan weekly inflation eased slightly in the week ended October 15, 2026. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said on Friday that its Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), a weekly index of essential goods, fell 0.04% from the previous week. The dip was small, but prices were still 11.38% higher than in the same week a year earlier.

The SPI stood at 372.43 points, down from 372.58 in the previous week. Every consumption group in the PBS data recorded a small fall, with the lowest group, which covers spending up to Rs17,732, seeing the largest decline at 0.06%. The index covers 51 essential items in 17 urban centres.

Weekly moves in essential prices

Prices moved in both directions across the basket. Of the 51 items tracked, 23 rose, seven fell and 21 stayed unchanged, and the rises accounted for 45.10% of the basket. The PBS said the sharpest weekly fall was in tomatoes, at 23.05%, followed by onions at 4.90% and bananas at 2.59%.

Petrol dropped 0.70% during the week, while basmati rice, sugar and gur, a traditional unrefined sugar, also eased. On the upside, gram pulses rose 4.97%, wheat flour 3.36% and chicken 3.31%. Eggs, mash and masoor pulses, firewood, diesel and LPG, the gas used for cooking, also edged higher.

Yearly price pressure

The year-on-year picture is far harsher than the weekly one. Onions were 75.19% dearer than a year earlier, LPG 68.95% and electricity charges for the first quarter 58.59%. Petrol rose 49.60% and diesel 43.98%, while wheat flour was up 35.13% and chicken 20.77%.

Some items were cheaper than last year. Tomatoes were 63.65% lower, potatoes 39.93% and sugar 23.20%. Farm and building inputs also cost more: the average price of a 50-kilogram bag of Sona urea, a fertiliser, stayed at Rs4,780 during the week but was 9.19% higher than a year earlier. A 50-kilogram bag of cement averaged Rs1,600, up 0.27% on the week and 14.66% on the year.
