The University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada is offering UBC PhD funding of at least CAD 40,000 a year to eligible full-time doctoral students on its Vancouver campus. The guarantee covers the first four years of study, so the minimum package totals CAD 160,000. Canadian and international applicants, including those from Pakistan, can access the support after they win admission.

The higher floor took effect in September 2026 and applies to both domestic and international doctoral students. Two research-based programmes now advertising the package for a September 2027 start are the PhD in Counselling Psychology in the Faculty of Education and the PhD in Botany in the Faculty of Science.

Deadlines and what each programme covers

UBC has set 1 December 2026 as the application deadline for Counselling Psychology and 10 January 2027 for Botany. Both intakes begin in September 2027 and are taught on campus.

Counselling Psychology pairs professional counselling training with psychological research for careers in clinical work, education, and research. Botany offers research paths in plant biology, genetics, ecology, molecular biology, and environmental science. Neither programme requires the GRE.

How the money is put together

UBC PhD funding can come from university scholarships, external research awards, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. The university mixes these sources for each student according to individual arrangements and available posts.

Published first-year tuition is about CAD 10,081.65 for international students and CAD 5,738.52 for domestic students. Qualifying international students in eligible research-based programmes may receive an International Tuition Award of up to CAD 3,200 a year. For Counselling Psychology, UBC also lists additional student fees of about CAD 1,203.20 a year. In Botany, the Faculty of Science’s PhD Tuition Award policy uses graduate funding to cover tuition for eligible doctoral students in the first four years when tuition is not already paid from another source. Botany funding data for September 2024 to August 2025 show a median annual gross package of CAD 42,665 for supported students.

Who can apply from Pakistan

Counselling Psychology applicants normally need a thesis-based master’s degree in counselling psychology or an equivalent qualification, with an overall average of at least 80%, plus three recommendation letters and a statement of interest. Botany usually expects a Master of Science in botany or a related field with clear research ability; exceptional candidates may enter from a bachelor’s degree, and eligible master’s students may transfer under UBC rules. Botany generally looks for a B+ average—about 76% on UBC’s scale—and two recommendation letters. A supervisor’s commitment is not required before applying to Botany.

UBC recognises eligible Pakistani master’s, M.Phil., and master’s honours credentials with first-class or first-division standing, subject to its country-specific doctoral rules. Applicants whose earlier degrees were not taught mainly in English must meet English scores: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (at least 6.0 in each skill), Duolingo 125 overall (with the stated component floors), or TOEFL iBT under the older scale—90 for Counselling Psychology and 92 for Botany, each with at least 22 in every section if the test was taken before 21 January 2026. For tests on or after that date, UBC asks for an overall 4.5 on its revised six-point scale, with Botany listing further component minima.

Applications go through UBC’s official graduate admissions system after candidates review the relevant programme pages, create or use a Campus-Wide Login, and submit transcripts, referee details, and research interests.
