Authorities in Punjab's Jhelum district suspended three police personnel on Monday after a detainee reportedly took his own life inside the Dina police station. District Police Officer (DPO) Superintendent of Police Chaudhry Shafique ordered the immediate suspension of Sub-Inspector Shoaib Kiyani, the Station House Officer (SHO), along with a station clerk known as a moharrar and an active-duty constable. Disciplinary action was initiated after senior officers reviewed the circumstances surrounding the lockup fatality.
The deceased suspect was detained when his daughter submitted a formal grievance alleging sexual assault against him. According to a Jhelum police official who spoke without public attribution, investigators had not yet verified the criminal allegations before the suspect lost his life. Officials kept the names of the father and daughter confidential to preserve family privacy and prevent unnecessary grief.
Incident details and lockup security
Police accounts indicate that the detainee received a meal inside the lockup on Sunday evening accompanied by a cloth wrapper intended to cover the food. According to the officer, the prisoner utilized the fabric to fatally choke himself in the cell on Sunday night. The occurrence exposed potential lapses in cell security and oversight procedures, prompting district leadership to step in immediately.
In Pakistan's law enforcement structure, the Station House Officer (SHO) commands the local police post, while the moharrar handles record-keeping, detainee logging, and lockup management. When a suspect is detained for questioning, station personnel bear the legal responsibility of ensuring prisoner safety and regular surveillance. The presence of materials that could be used for self-harm within the cell has brought scrutiny to standard detention protocols.
Departmental proceedings and administrative inquiry
DPO Shafique responded to the event by ordering an internal inquiry into the conduct of the SHO, the moharrar, and the constable. The administrative probe aims to establish whether the suspended staff engaged in professional misconduct or neglected essential custodial duties. Police leadership confirmed that a comprehensive review into the death continues in order to fix institutional responsibility.
The findings of the departmental inquiry will decide whether further administrative sanctions or professional penalties are warranted against the personnel. Police authorities reiterated that custodial deaths require rigorous internal reviews to maintain public trust in local police stations. Further administrative determinations will follow once the investigating officers conclude their examination of the night's logbooks and duties.
