Gilgit-Baltistan police have arrested 58 people in a Gilgit Baltistan police recruitment fraud case after suspects allegedly appeared at interviews in place of shortlisted candidates for corporal and constable posts. The arrests were made while interviews were under way at the Central Police Office in Gilgit. Cases were registered under Section 419 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), the law that deals with cheating by personation, or pretending to be someone else.
How the arrests unfolded
According to a GB police official, candidates who had cleared the written examination were called for interviews under the stated merit and eligibility rules. Fifty-eight people were detained for allegedly sitting those interviews on behalf of the real shortlisted applicants. The suspects were taken to a police station, and cases of impersonation were filed against them. They were also barred from the recruitment process.
The hiring drive seeks to fill more than 800 vacant corporal and constable posts. More than 2,000 male and female candidates from across the region had been shortlisted for interviews, which remain in progress at the Central Police Office in Gilgit.
What police say about merit and transparency
A spokesperson for GB police said action is being taken against people involved in legal violations and fraudulent activity so that recruitment stays transparent and based on merit. The spokesperson said measures would continue without discrimination, aiming to protect the rights of eligible candidates and keep public trust in the process.
An official of GB police separately said interviews for corporals and constables were being conducted according to merit and eligibility criteria. The same official said the list of selected candidates would be issued within a few days after the interview stage is completed.
What happens next
Interviews for the large shortlisted pool are still continuing, and police say enforcement against fraud is ongoing. For genuine applicants who passed the written test, the immediate stakes are whether the remaining stages stay free of impersonation and whether the final selection list reflects those who actually appeared. The department has linked the crackdown to preserving confidence in a drive meant to staff more than 800 posts across Gilgit-Baltistan.
