The KP wheat quota has been raised, with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Department increasing the daily wheat release from 3,000 to 4,000 metric tonnes. The extra 1,000 tonnes a day will go to operational flour mills, which turn the grain into flour for sale. The department acted after a Peshawar High Court decision and directions from the Cabinet Oversight Committee, according to a notification it issued. Earlier coverage is available in our report on the same release.
Why the release was increased
The decision followed a report by the Storage and Enforcement Officer at the National Reserve Centre (NRC) in Azakhel, where the government stores wheat. The report found that flash flooding had allowed floodwater to enter the warehouses and soak the lower layers of wheat bags. Six of the centre's 11 warehouses were damaged, while the other five stayed safe. The report recommended releasing the stocks quickly to prevent further losses, particularly with more rain forecast.
Districts and mills receiving the extra wheat
Under the revised KP wheat quota, the additional supply will come from the NRC warehouses in Azakhel and be divided among all districts in proportion to the province's population of 43.84 million. Peshawar receives the largest listed extra share at 116 tonnes a day, followed by Mardan with 67 tonnes and Swabi with 46 tonnes. Charsadda gets 45 tonnes, Nowshera 43 and Lower Dir 40, while Bajaur gets 32 tonnes and Kohat 30. The Director Food has told district food controllers and rationing controllers to implement the revised allocation.
Checks on mills and sales
Before wheat is lifted, district food controllers and rationing controllers must submit verified lists of operational flour mills to the release committee. All records of wheat allocation, transport and release must be updated on the department's ICT application without delay. Officials have also been told to make sure government flour made from the extra wheat reaches consumers through authorised dealers at officially notified prices. The notification does not announce a new flour price, so buyers should check the notified rate at their local dealer.
