Gunmen targeted the vehicle of North Waziristan’s district police officer on Sunday afternoon, but Sajjad Hussain and members of his security squad were unhurt, police officials said. The shooting took place on the Mirali Bypass while a curfew was already in force in Mirali and nearby areas.
How the attack unfolded
Police said the attackers fired on the vehicle carrying the district police chief. No one was reported killed or injured in the incident. Details on who carried out the attack, and why, were not immediately available.
The strike came at a time when public movement in Mirali and its surroundings was restricted because of the security situation. Security personnel had already been posted at various points, and travel along the Mirali Bypass and adjoining roads remained limited under the curfew.
Security response after the shooting
After the shooting, security was tightened further in the area. Police established checkpoints at important locations and began a search operation to find those involved. Law enforcement agencies also opened an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
That the district police chief’s vehicle could be targeted despite movement restrictions has raised concerns about local security. Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to follow the curfew and other orders from the authorities.
