Pakistan and China have launched the Pak-China joint military exercise “Karakoram 2026” in Korla, in China’s Xinjiang region, with a clear focus on counterterrorism cooperation and closer operational coordination between the two armed forces. The opening ceremony was held in Korla, where troops from both sides began specialised training.

Details released with the launch say the exercise is meant to improve combat capabilities and make it easier for the two militaries to work together in joint operations. That includes sharing field experience as well as practising how commanders and units coordinate under pressure.

What the drills cover in Korla

Training under Karakoram 2026 includes drone operations, detecting and engaging moving targets, and precision firing. The programme also covers long-range marksmanship, joint command operations and practical combat drills designed to raise interoperability—meaning how smoothly the two forces can operate side by side.

Pakistani and Chinese troops are exchanging operational expertise on counterterrorism. Pakistan Army personnel are also familiarising themselves with Chinese weapon systems during the exercise, giving them direct exposure to equipment used by their Chinese counterparts.

Why closer defence cooperation matters

The Pak-China joint military exercise is presented as a sign of growing defence cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing. Beyond ceremonial optics, the stated priorities are operational readiness, stronger counterterrorism skills and better coordination when forces act together.

For readers in Pakistan, that framing sits within a long-standing security partnership with China. The Korla drills do not by themselves change civilian policy at home, but they underline how both sides are investing in joint training against terror-related and battlefield scenarios.

What comes next

Specialised training is already under way after the Korla opening, covering drones, marksmanship, joint command and related combat drills announced at the launch. The public focus for now remains on those counterterrorism and coordination aims.
