The Pakistan school collapse in Peshawar on Thursday, October 15, 2026, killed 34 children and a teacher. The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the northwestern province, has since ordered inspections of private school buildings across the province. The roof of Al-Khair school in the Dir Colony neighbourhood fell while classes were under way. Police arrested the school's owner, Mohammad Khan, and the provincial government has announced an investigation into what caused the collapse.
Rescue, the order and official responses
Emergency crews reached the site within five minutes of being alerted, and everyone trapped under the rubble had been recovered by the time the operation ended that day. Bilal Faizi, a spokesperson for emergency services in Peshawar, said rescuers pulled at least 40 children out alive. He said the roof was a traditional structure made of mud and bricks, and that some of the children died of suffocation.
The provincial order directs the education department to set up district committees that will inspect private school buildings and report their findings and recommendations within three days. The checks must cover rented premises as well as owned ones. Inspectors are asked to examine roofs, ceilings, walls, columns, beams, foundations and staircases, and to classify each building as safe, in need of repairs or improvements, or potentially unsafe.
Government spokesperson Samar Haroon Bilour expressed grief over the deaths and injuries on Friday. In a video message, she urged parents to tell authorities about schools housed in structurally weak buildings, and said the government was also carrying out inspections to prevent similar tragedies.
Causes under investigation and relatives' warnings
Officials and the school owner have given different accounts, and no official cause has been confirmed. Peshawar Police Chief Saeed Ahmed said the building was structurally weak. Khan told officers that recent rains had weakened one of the roofs.
Relatives describe a longer problem. Mohammad Zaman, whose two nephews died, said he and other relatives had repeatedly complained to the owner about rainwater seeping into classrooms, and that he warned the building's condition could lead to a tragedy. Zakir Ullah, who lost two sons who were in the same classroom, described the building as weak and demanded punishment for any officials who authorised its use as a school. "How could I have known this would take both my sons away from me," he said.
Injured teacher Mahwish Zaman, speaking from hospital, said the ceiling gave way so suddenly that no one had time to escape. The sources do not say whether any earlier complaint reached the education department or other authorities, and the claim that the structure had previously been reported as weak has not been confirmed.
