Peshawar terrorist attack today on a police post in Hassan Khel was foiled when local officers beat back a large militant assault, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) of Peshawar said on Friday.

The CCPO said more than 30 terrorists struck the Speen Mela police post. The attackers moved in from two directions and opened fire with heavy weapons, including from the Moosazai Dara side. Sixteen Peshawar police personnel faced the assault, held their ground, and pushed the attackers back.

How the Speen Mela post was hit

According to the CCPO, the Hassan Khel attack was aimed at the Speen Mela post rather than a civilian market or road. Militants tried to overrun the post with a two-pronged approach and heavy fire. Police described the response as strong resistance that stopped the attempt to take the facility.

The CCPO also said the attackers had brought an improvised explosive device (IED)—a homemade bomb. Police personnel found and defused it, removing that threat from the scene after the gun battle.

Casualties among Peshawar police

One Peshawar police officer was martyred in the fighting, the CCPO said. Three other personnel were injured. No other casualty figures for this incident were given in the available account.

Officials framed the outcome as a failed raid on the post: the Peshawar terrorist attack today did not succeed in capturing Speen Mela, and the IED did not explode after police made it safe.

Wider security context in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The same provincial security picture includes an earlier incident this year in Hangu district, where officials said police, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD)—the anti-terror police wing—and other forces repelled a much larger infiltration. In that separate episode, officials said more than 100 terrorists linked to Fitna Al-Khawarij (FAK) tried to push in from Orakzai’s mountains toward Zargari, Shinawari, and Naryab after an operation began on a Monday, and Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zulfiqar Hameed praised units that held those posts.

That Hangu episode is distinct from Friday’s Hassan Khel events, but it shows why posts such as Speen Mela remain frequent targets.

Timeline: what has happened so far

  • Earlier this year: Forces in Hangu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, repelled a major infiltration bid by more than 100 terrorists, officials said; six civilians were martyred and 13 injured in that fighting, according to the account of that earlier clash.
  • Monday (during the Hangu episode): Security forces launched an operation; terrorists then tried to move from Orakzai’s mountains toward Zargari, Shinawari, and Naryab and to surround border posts, officials said.
  • Friday: Peshawar terrorist attack today at Speen Mela in Hassan Khel—over 30 militants, 16 defending officers, one officer martyred, three injured, IED defused—was reported by the CCPO as foiled.
