The Punjab Food Authority has seized 1,150kg of spices and halted production at a spice manufacturing unit in the 126/15-L area of Khanewal, in southern Punjab, until the unit improves. The Punjab Food Authority, known as PFA, announced the action on October 12. It was carried out on the orders of Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmed as part of a wider drive against food adulteration and the sale of food that does not meet standards.
Samples failed quality checks
A spokesperson for the authority said samples of red chilli and turmeric powder collected from the unit did not pass the quality benchmarks set for them. The spices were reportedly meant for distribution to several locations. A food safety team seized the full stock and the machinery was also taken into custody.
Crackdown continues
Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmed said the authority will not compromise on supplying the public with food that is safe, good in quality and free of adulteration. He added that action will continue against people involved in adulteration and fraud, and that strict legal measures will be taken against anyone whose conduct endangers public health. The available information does not say whether cases have been registered or when the unit may reopen.
