The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has identified a beheaded body found on 13 October in an open field in the Manawan area of Lahore. The authority's Meri Pehchan team matched the deceased person's fingerprints through biometric equipment linked to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), the national body that holds citizen identity records. A spokesperson said emergency helpline 15 received urgent information about the discovery and that response units rushed to the site.

How the identification was done

The spokesperson said the biometric apparatus is integrated directly with the NADRA network. In practice, that means a fingerprint taken from the deceased can be checked against an identity record already stored in that system. The spokesperson said the match, and therefore the identification, was completed promptly. The helpline call and the dispatch of response units came first in the account; the fingerprint match is what established who the deceased was.

The unit is called Meri Pehchan, a name that translates as "my identity". The PSCA Meri Pehchan team also works beyond single emergency calls. Its routine mandate is to survey hospitals, mortuaries and old-age shelters across Punjab, tracing missing or unidentified people so that grieving families can have closure. The spokesperson described this routine work as a welfare and humanitarian part of the initiative.

The police case

Initial findings indicate that the victim was the subject of an alleged honour killing, meaning a killing said to be linked to family honour. Police have apprehended a prime suspect in connection with the homicide and have registered a case to proceed with legal action. Those findings are at an early stage. An allegation of this kind is for investigators and the courts to test.

Speaking about the wider effort, the spokesperson said the Meri Pehchan squad has identified upwards of 5,000 unclaimed bodies to date. The figure covers the squad's work over time. It is not a tally of bodies found in the Manawan field. Naming the dead is the part of the work the spokesperson tied to closure for grieving families.
