A terrorist plot foiled in Pakistan unfolded through a series of intelligence-based raids in Punjab, where the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) — the provincial police unit that investigates terrorism — arrested eight suspected members of banned outfits and seized explosives and other prohibited material, a CTD spokesperson said on 17 October in Lahore.
The spokesperson said the CTD ran 91 intelligence-based operations in different districts to stop possible attacks. During those raids, 91 people were questioned and eight suspects were taken into custody. The men were named as Shehzad Akbar, Mahmood, Ali, Nauman, Adnan, Farooq, Rehman and Humayun. They were described as linked to Fitna al-Khawarij and other terrorist organisations, and as coming from Gujranwala, Bahawalpur, Chiniot, Rawalpindi, Bhakkar and Sargodha.
What CTD Punjab says it recovered
From the suspects, CTD Punjab said it recovered 465 grams of explosives, three detonators, 20 feet of safety fuse wire, two hand grenades, pamphlets and magazines of banned organisations, a prima card, mobile phones and cash. The spokesperson alleged the group had planned actions in various areas meant to spread fear. Seven cases have been registered against those arrested, and further investigation is continuing.
Wider combing across the province
Separately, the CTD, working with local police and other security agencies, carried out 1,484 combing operations across Punjab. In those sweeps, 50,865 people were checked, 77 suspects were arrested, 65 first information reports (FIRs) — the formal police complaints that start a criminal case — were registered, and 45 recoveries were made, the spokesperson said.
Official message and public tip line
The spokesperson said CTD Punjab remains focused on keeping the province safe and on bringing terrorists and anti-state elements before the law. Residents were urged to pass on useful information through the CTD Punjab helpline 0800-11111. Officials framed the arrests as part of ongoing work to disrupt planning before it reaches the streets, which is the practical meaning of a terror plot foiled when police move early on intelligence.
Taken together, the day’s account centres on one cluster of eight arrests tied to alleged planning, plus a much larger set of routine combing checks. How the seven registered cases proceed will depend on evidence gathered in the continuing inquiry. For now, the public record rests on what CTD Punjab has stated about the operations, the seizures and the names of those held.
