Karachi University, known as KU, has proposed a Pakistan-China centre focused on AI and cybersecurity, along with a Pakistan-China museum on its campus. The ideas were raised at a meeting in Karachi between Prof Dr Wasim Qazi, the vice chancellor, and Feng Deheng, China's acting consul general, at the Chinese mission. The Karachi University AI centre is meant to support joint research and student training, while the museum would preserve the shared history of the two countries.

What the proposed centre and museum would do

The AI and cybersecurity centre would act as a base for collaborative research, advanced technology development and training for students and teachers. Dr Qazi also wants training in areas such as agriculture, energy, pharmacy and microbiology. He linked the plans to two 75th anniversaries, those of Pakistan-China diplomatic ties and of KU itself.

Feng praised KU for its role in educational cooperation, especially via its Confucius Institute. He said the centre could widen cooperation in new technologies and open doors for research partnerships and career training. The museum would hold historical records, academic material, important papers and cultural objects, with the aim of helping visitors understand the histories and traditions of both nations.

A separate proposal is a Hall of Fame to honour people who have made notable contributions to education and scholarship.

Next steps and what is still unclear

Dr Qazi said he is committed to turning the proposals into concrete projects, joint studies and formal agreements between institutions. He plans to travel to China in November, where he will explore possible deals on science, technology and academic exchange with major Chinese universities. KU has also asked top universities and institutes in China to take part in the initiative.

The plans remain at the proposal stage, and no opening date or budget has been announced.
