The Meta AI Muse app has passed 10 million downloads in the United States within its first 40 days on the market, a pace only 11 other apps have matched. New data from the market intelligence firm Sensor Tower shows Muse recorded 10.9 million downloads since its September debut, with 10.2 million of them in the US. The milestone matters because keeping users is harder than attracting them, and the same data shows Muse holding on to users better than rival AI apps.
Downloads and rankings
Sensor Tower's Senior Insights Analyst, Kara Lee, said only 11 other apps have reached this kind of post-launch milestone. The most recent was Meta's Threads in July 2023, and most of the others were mobile games. In the US, Muse's total also sits well above several AI rivals: ChatGPT recorded 3.7 million US downloads in its first 40 days, while Grok and Claude recorded 500,000 and 200,000.
The global picture is different. ChatGPT reached around 15 million downloads worldwide in the same period, but the comparison is not like for like. Muse is available only in the US and Canada for now, whereas ChatGPT drew strong interest from markets such as Japan, Brazil and Germany. Japan alone made up 25% of ChatGPT's global installs in its first 40 days.
Muse has held the No. 1 spot on the US App Store on most days since launch. The streaming app Kick briefly overtook it on October 19, and Muse regained the top position by Tuesday. On Google Play, Muse has ranked No. 1 over the past 30 days.
Marketing and retention
Muse's reach owes much to Meta's own platforms. The company has promoted the AI agent across its family of apps, a strategy it also used for Threads, which was built on Instagram's social graph and whose content now appears on Facebook and Instagram. Meta's family of apps includes 3.6 billion daily active users.
Meta is also spending heavily on paid promotion. According to Sensor Tower's data, 39% of Meta's total advertising spend went to Muse in October, up from 23% last month. Muse now ranks as the 21st largest brand in the US by advertising impressions this month, up from 73rd in September.
Downloads are only part of the picture. In the US, Muse kept 30% of its users after seven days and 23% after 14 days, while rival AI apps averaged 19% and 16% over the same periods. Daily active users reached 2.5 million for the first time on October 16, a 15% rise week over week. Whether Muse can reach other countries has not been confirmed.
